Meet the Physicians

Carmen D. Rocco, M.D.

I was born in Habana, Cuba. My father was a pediatrician and practiced here in Brownsville (Dr. Rafael de la Cruz). My mother is and has always been a housewife although she has worked as an educator and a nurse assitant. I have a brother and a sister.

I graduated from high school is Austin, Texas and graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin. I attended medical school at the Medical Branch in Galveston in 1986.

During my years in Galveston I had opportinities to write and became funded to do many education programs and programs that impacted under served populations. I also experienced health care first hand when I was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes (Hodgkin’s Disease) in 1985 and underwent surgery and treatment in 1986. I have practiced in Brownsville since 1986. I first worked with my father and exclusively with the Brownsville Community Health Center until 1998.

I am board certified in pediactrics and I am on the clinical faculty of the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston and University of Texas Medical Branch-San Antonio. I am married to Jim Goza. We have three children. I am devoted to children: mine, yours and our community’s. It is a wonderful experience to share in the health care of your child.

Linda Esquibel, CPNP

I moved to Brownsville originally in 1990 from Laredo, Texas. My mother was a neonatal nurse and moved here to begin working in a newly opened neonatal intensive care unit. Through her work, I was able to see the impact she had on the lives of the babies and the families she cared for.

In 1999, I married my husband and traveled with him while he served in the US Army. During that time, my love for children was realized with the birth of my own 3 children.

My passion has always been pediatrics! I went to school to become a pediatric nurse in 2007 and graduated from Central Texas College in 2010.  I went on to pursue my Master’s degree in 2013 at The University of Texas El Paso after several years working with pediatric patients in the hospital setting and have been practicing as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner since graduating at Brownsville Kiddie Health Center.

This journey has been an amazing one of dedication and growth and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to take part in the lives and the care of your children!

Vanessa Garza, CPNP

I was born in Brownsville, Texas, and I have lived here all my life. I graduated from Hanna High School in 2007, and I attended University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College as part of their Associate Degree Nursing program.

It was through this program that I realized I wanted to help children. I learned so much from my pediatric rotation, and I took my first Registered Nurse position at Valley Regional in the pediatric unit in 2009.

My focus continued to be with pediatrics as I worked as a bedside nurse for 6 years, and my love for pediatrics only grew. During this time, I got my bachelors degree, and I realized I wanted to learn more in order to better serve my pediatric patients. I graduated with a Master’s degree from the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Texas at El Paso, and I have worked as a PNP since 2017 at Brownsville Kiddie Health Center.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to connect with the patients and their families, and I am proud to be a member of a clinic that diligently serves this community.
